Christantus Uche Ignites Straightforward Crystal Palace Win at Shelbourne.
Despite embarking on their maiden European campaign, Oliver Glasner's side are learning very quickly. Missing star players like striker Jean-Philippe Mateta and defender Daniel Muñoz, the London club left Dublin with a commanding result that virtually guarantees them a spot in the Europa Conference League qualifying rounds.
A further three points in their next match against Finnish KuPS should be enough to seal straight passage to the last 16, especially after a previous stumble against Strasbourg.
Squad Members Seize the Opportunity
This match offered a platform for some of Palace's fringe players to shine. Christantus Uche, making only his second start after joining on loan from Getafe, opened the account with a clinical finish. Striker Eddie Nketiah contributed a second, scoring for the second consecutive match.
A Shelbourne team that had concluded their domestic season proved outmatched even for a largely rotated Palace lineup. The Londoners were already depleted by the news that Mateta and Muñoz are sidelined with leg problems.
Dominance Established from the Outset
In spite of torrential rain in Dublin, Palace quickly established dominance. A slick passing sequence in the 11th minute, sparked by Daichi Kamada's clever pass, allowed Nketiah to lay on Uche for a straightforward finish.
Midfielder Adam Wharton went close soon after, fizzing a powerful shot over the bar. Nketiah then claimed for a penalty after bursting into the area, but the official waved away the protests.
Ex-Arsenal man didn't need to wait long to get his goal, prodding home from close range after Uche's shot had struck the post.
Shelbourne were clinging on for dear life. Defender Kameron Ledwidge was lucky to avoid a booking for a couple of robust tackles on Yeremy Pino, before Chris Richards rattled the woodwork with a powerful header from a corner.
Yeremy Pino Seals the Contest
The contest was effectively over eight minutes before half-time. Yeremy Pino meandered past some weak challenges before calmly slotting a shot past goalkeeper Wessel Speel to extend the lead to 3-0.
Following the break, manager Oliver Glasner took the chance to rest key players like Kamada and Wharton. Substitute Romain Esse came close to scoring his very first touch, only to see his effort blocked.
Esse was incredibly unlucky later on, seeing one attempt strike off both posts before being gathered on the line. Uche also missed a sitter of a chance, showing there is still scope for development in his game.
The only concern for Palace was a second-half knock to Justin Devenny, who was forced off. This allowed 17-year-old striker Benji Casey to make his first-team debut, capping an otherwise positive night for the visiting side.
