Far-Right Former Lawmaker J.A. Kast Elected as Chile Next President.
Following a conclusive final ballot, hardline candidate José Antonio Kast has won the presidency in Chile.
A Clear-Cut Win
With over 99% of ballots counted, Kast garnered 58.17% of the votes, defeating leftist former minister Jeannette Jara, who obtained 41.83%.
This marks Kast's third attempt at the presidency, having previously been beaten by the sitting president, Gabriel Boric, in the 2021 final vote.
Agenda Centered On Security and Immigration
Recognized for his strong Catholic views and admiration for the era of former leader Augusto Pinochet, Kast's campaign was primarily built on promises to combat growing crime and significantly curb migration.
He repeatedly cited immigrants, particularly the around 330,000 unauthorized individuals in Chile, for crime rates. During the election cycle, he issued an final demand for them to depart before the inauguration or face removal.
His plans envisioned U.S.-style measures such as constructing detention centers, border walls, security fences, and strengthening the army presence on the northern border.
Amid a Broader Trend
Numerous observers see Kast's victory as fitting into a broader conservative shift in Latin America, following recent electoral outcomes in countries like Ecuador, Bolivia, and Argentina.
Yet, other pundits further view it as a continuation of the regular rotation of power between left-wing and right governments since Chile's return to democracy in 1990.
Leading Lacking a Solid Mandate
In spite of his sweeping popular vote victory, Kast does not command an clear majority in parliament, not in the Chamber of Deputies nor the Senate, even if various rightwing parties are grouped together.
This legislative situation may complicate his plans, including a vow to slash public spending by billions within a year and a half—a plan for which he has not detailed concrete steps.
"There are many things about how a Kast government will look like that we don't know because he has not explained the way he will achieve them," noted a political professor.
The expert continued, "On the economy, it is almost certain we will see austerity policies associated with the right. But the area with much less doubt is on public safety, because that has been his central theme during the campaign."
