That Gruesome Cartoon Film Ending That Lingers Audiences
Among all the mature cartoon movies I’ve personally watched, no other has lingered in my mind quite like the dread-soaked conclusion of the graphically gory and highly provocative 2022 movie Unicorn Wars.
In 2015’s, this Spanish filmmaker created a dark, melancholy , often savage universe with a few small , forlorn hints of optimism.
Although The Unicorn Wars seems like it originated from a drive to advance animation even more, the filmmaker stated that it was actually a try to express a global, multicultural theme regarding “the shared root of every conflict.”
That message is communicated through a band of vividly colored bears , clearly inspired by a famous series of lovable figures.
Growing up in a society built around warmongering and the war machine, many of these animals are obsessed with killing the mythical beasts, because of a holy book that tells them they were once masters of the woodland, before these creatures forced them out.
Others haven’t fully accepted the brainwashing, , prefer to experiment with substances or fornicate in the forest.
In contrast to their gentle counterparts, these vivid animals show sexual organs and obvious sex drives.
For one especially vicious, skeptical animal, the bear named Bluey, the war with the unicorns turns into a route toward dominance — and specifically to authority over his more tender, nicer brother the bear Tubby.
This bear is a bully , an obvious psychopath , and while terror dominates his unit and takes his fellow soldiers individually, he takes increasingly influence for himself, through ever more gory, harmful methods.
At the same time, the horned creatures are experiencing their own terror, through a growing, deadly beast in their habitat.
“At the beginning, it seems like a humorous movie,” the filmmaker said. “However it becomes a more intense and melancholic movie. And in the finale, it’s a scary feature.”
Unicorn Wars begins feeling a bit like one of the most whimsical films from an iconic animator, that uncover a wicked pleasure in permitting cartoon characters swear, fire weapons, or sex each other up.
Then it evolves into closer to a more grim film from the same creator, with increasingly graphic violence and a palpable connection to genuine tragedy of conflict.
By the end, it is an outright Grand Guignol carnage.
The fear which makes this an ideal spooky-season watch starts well before than one might expect.
Unicorn Wars is one for the devoted fans of gore, for enthusiasts of graphic films who desire to see something they have not viewed until now, and are able to withstand a narrative that pulls absolutely no punches.
See it with the lights off free from interruptions, and the conclusion will crawl into your mind and take up residence there.
