The Details Known Regarding the Victims of the Bondi Beach Shooting

A minimum of 16 lives perished and over 40 sustained injuries when gunmen fired on a Hanukkah event at Bondi Beach, an incident local police have labeled a act of terrorism.

In the latest update, officials have confirmed the number of fatalities stands at 16, which includes one of the suspected attackers. Moreover, 42 wounded individuals were admitted to medical facilities.

Those who died are still awaiting officially identified, but investigators think their ages range between 10 and 87 years of age.

Below are the victims who have been identified so far.

Eli Schlanger

London-born clergyman Eli Schlanger, 41, was initially identified.

Reportedly a father-of-five, he worked as the assistant rabbi at a local Jewish cultural centre. Relatives and friends spoke of him as “vivacious, energetic, full of life and a very warm outgoing person who was dedicated to assisting others”.

“How can a happy rabbi who went to a beach to share joy and positivity, to make the world a better place, lose his life in this way?” a family member said.

Schlanger and his wife celebrated the birth of their newest son in October.

Alexander Kleytman

Alexander Kleytman was also among those killed, as stated by his wife.

She described the events before the attack, explaining they were standing when the shooting started. “He shielded me because he wanted to stay near me,” she stated.

The couple were both survivors of the Holocaust, having experienced unspeakable terror in their childhood. They had later moved to Australia from Ukraine.

Dan Elkayam

The French authorities have announced that French man Dan Elkayam is among the victims.

Officially, the Foreign Minister declared that France stood with his family and loved ones, the Jewish community, and the Australian people.

“This cowardly attack is a new, tragic manifestation of a disgusting rise of hatred against Jews that we must eradicate,” the message read.

One Child

A young girl, aged 10 who was rushed to the a children's hospital is among those who had died, authorities stated.

One Israeli Citizen

An Israeli citizen was a fatality in the incident, according to multiple sources referencing the Israeli government.

Those Injured

From the 42 people taken to hospitals, many remain under care, with five in critical condition. The injured include two police officers who attended the scene.

A casualty is a member of the public who rushed to the scene to tackle one of the attackers. Hailed as a local hero, he received gunshot wounds but is expected to recover in hospital.

Arsen Ostrovsky

One of those wounded is Arsen Ostrovsky, a human rights lawyer. It has been reported he was hurt and is receiving treatment in hospital.

Communicating, he recounted the incident as an “horrific scene,” but also praised the response of those who rushed to help. He said he believed it was a “miracle” he was alive.

Evan Zlatkis

Evan Zlatkis, a media director, was also injured in the attack. He described he heard “a large number” of shots.

“Initially, I believed it was rubber bullets, but it penetrated my own skin and into my leg,” he said. “I sustained a gunshot wound. I received first aid. I’m ok.”
