The Game UN:Me: An Cerebral Thriller Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Gameplay
The recent Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating future games, but one especially has captured attention: UN:Me. Created by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience seems to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the suspicion-driven heart of Among Us.
"It's a unique experience where a young woman harboring several human souls inside her must escape from a maze of the mind," states producer Yasukazu Kawai.
Entering a Fractured Mind
In UN:Me, players assume the role of an unnamed female protagonist who appears to be of high school age. Inside her reside four separate personas, all possessing their own fears and motivations. These entities can take over at will, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her suddenly.
Judging by revealed gameplay, much of the action unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate church.
An Environment of Personal Dread
"What makes you fearful of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks game director Shun Sasaki. "Heights. Confined spaces. People in power. Things that appear minor to other people can trigger something primal inside us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to each person."
The central gameplay loop involves controlling the persona that emerges at any given moment. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. During exploration, every persona's anxieties become amplified and assault the girl one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.
Eerie Visuals and a Deadly Decision
Initially, UN:Me shares noticeable visual similarities with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with orderlies all sporting the same face, with disturbingly broad grins. Patients in the lobby have enormous flowers growing from their heads are. Floral motifs are a recurring theme, juxtaposing organic elegance with unnatural horror.
Yet, UN:Me presents a singular twist. Players must determine which of the four entities haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "All four souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "Throughout the game, you need to figure out who is real."
Once players believes a persona is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, because each soul can deceive or obfuscate the truth, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.
"Perhaps you've already eliminated the true [soul] with your own hands," the narration suggests. "The last one remaining could be a fraud. Either way, your choices are irreversible."
UN:Me currently lacks a confirmed release date, but it is can be wishlist on platforms.
