For much of the concluding season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max Mayfield are imprisoned inside a mental fortress built from the recollections of Vecna. The search for a way out in the pivotal sixth episode leads them to witness again a traumatic incident from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the means to overcome him permanently.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

After locating Max in the psychic realm called Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry is terrified of. By leaving the lens cap on a telescope taken from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the danger lies outside of the cave. Matching her view with the shape, she and Max tumble into a subterranean passage.

There, they witness a Henry as a boy find an man who is hurt and scared. When Henry tries to help, the man fires a gun, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. The answer is affirmative, but the event involved more than a defensive killing.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

The play reveals the legendary naval test, which transported a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

This man's son, a young Martin Brenner, wanted to repeat this experiment in remote Nevada. But a disloyal lab worker stole research materials to sell to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. The man in the cavern was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is revealed about his research, the container would assuredly have samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. He likely becomes contaminated upon opening the case, which triggered the awakening of his powers—abilities he would later pass on to the children in Hawkins Lab.

Another possibility, the container could have held exotic matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it acts to anchor the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy was transported in the Abyss, returning hours later with a new blood type and personality. Throughout the play, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, reminiscent of how Will Byers was possessed by the entity in season 2.

The Power of Fear

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine highlights how deeply scarring the event was for him. Even as he commands the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. The villain weaponizes terror, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between Vecna and Will, who has overcome his own deepest fears to become stronger.

This journey has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Crucially, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, and this may grant a decisive edge in the ultimate battle to come.
